Credit Bianca Andreescu for battling back from down a break in the third set despite being impacted physically in that match.

But Jasmine Paolini came up with big shots in the third set, the biggest being a forehand return winner to go up 5-4 and serve for the match.

Jasmine Paolini (5) finishes off Bianca Andreescu, winning 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4. She'll face Karolína Plíšková next.

Having now beaten Andreescu at three separate Grand Slam tournaments this season (also Wimbledon and French Open), Paolini becomes just the fourth woman in the past 40 years to defeat a former singles major winner at three Grand Slams in a season.

The other woman who did so three times in a single season:

  • Martina Navratilova against Chris Evert in 1984
  • Serena Williams against Venus Williams in 2002
  • Justine Henin against Serena Williams in 2007

Andreescu ailing

It's clear Bianca Andreescu's feet are bothering her. After each point, she is banging them on the court. The Canadian wants to keep the points short.

"One at a time," said Andreescu's coach J.T. Nishimura.

Meanwhile, Jasmine Paolini (5) is making this a physical match, extending the rallies, recognizing that Andreescu is struggling.

Andreescu staves off a break point to hold serve but still trails 3-2 in the final set. She calls for the physio again as she slowly walks to her chair.

Paolini and Andreescu head to third set

Jasmine Paolini (5) finishes off the second set 6-2 against Bianca Andreescu.

After losing the first set in 80 minutes in a tiebreak, Paolini didn't falter. She raised her game, only losing three of her first-serve points and tallying nine winners to six unforced errors.

It will be interesting to see how Andreescu regroups in the third. Regardless, the crowd at Louis Armstrong is loud and ready for a fun final set of tennis!

It's still a long shot that Andreescu wins this second set but she is starting to rediscover her form from earlier in the match.

Translation: Expect a fun third set!

Raducanu forces third set against Kenin

Everything that happened on Day 2 of the 2024 US Open (95)

Emma Raducanu is right back in this match, leveling it up by taking the second set 6-3 against Sofia Kenin.

The momentum shifted in the fifth game with Kenin serving at 2-2 and seemingly in control. Raducanu won a couple of points from defensive positions and it seemed to rattle her opponent, who was promptly broken.

Raducanu will serve first in the decider after breaking again at 5-3. Kenin needs to refocus after showing visible signs of frustration as the set got away from her.
