Matthew 6:19-21 | HempfieldUMC.org (2024)

Don’t store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don’t break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:19-21)

Jesus wants his followers to be focused on what is truly important. He doesn’t want us to waste our energies on things that won’t last. Everything in this world is temporal and is passing away. Upon our death, everything we own will either be given to someone else or thrown away. But the treasures of the kingdom of God are eternal and given for us to keep and enjoy. Our very souls can become storehouses of spiritual blessings that endure to eternity.

But so often we come to God asking for temporal things. God has indeed promised to provide what is needed for our temporal life, but He wants to do so much more for us. The blessings of love, peace, and true joy are spiritual gifts God wishes to give to all His children. So let’s begin to value these eternal spiritual blessings and ask our loving Heavenly Father for the eternal gifts He is so ready to give.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, you are the source of all spiritual blessing. Teach me to value the eternal treasures of your kingdom over the temporal things of earth. Let my soul become a storehouse of these blessings for my own sake and for the sake of the people I love. Fill me with love, joy, peace, and all other attributes of your kingdom.
