Follow the path near the merchant and drop down into the room. A short cutscene will play where you can see the Red Monk and its ability to force adult plagas to spawn, making enemies much more fearsome. There are multiple red barrels in the area, luckily. Stay crouched and head to the right – stick right and you’ll see stairs to get up to the Red Monk.

You should take them out as a priority, as they hold the Crimson Flame you need to get out. Return his Crimson Flame lantern to the room you came from in order to open the door to the next area.

You can’t do much in this room, so unlock the door on the left side of the room, and then head through the right side. Follow the path for a new cutscene. After the cutscene, you’ll need to search this room for Lithographic Stones – check our Lithographic Stone puzzle guide for a full explanation on how to get through this.

After you get through, you’ll have your first encounter with a creepy crawly spider-like plagas. These are easy enough to kill, but are fast and can control Ganados, making them much more hostile and aggressive.

This section is pretty tough, and mixes puzzles with hardcore combat. There’s even a Clockwork Castellan hidden around here. The castle drawbridge ahead is closed, but you should use your rifle to take out the crossbow users on the roof first. After that, take out the weight to the left of the drawbridge to bring it down, and get ready for a bunch of Ganados to spill out. If you keep a careful eye out, you can open up several of the gates in this area by shooting weights, but it’s not necessary to progress.

The next few areas will have gold levers, and while these levers open certain doors, they close others. Take out the Ganados as you move through, and in this first room, you can go through straight through the first door, up the ladder, flip the switch, and then drop back down the ladder and head out the open door.

Drop down into the next area, head back through to the lowest level, and then flip the switch which is around the corner on your right. Continue down the path, and climb up the rubble ahead. Stay on the path and in the next area, watch for the shield wielder and crossbow Ganado on the stairs.

Activate the lever here so you can get up to the roof, and once up there, you’ll be encountered by an El Gigante, which is throwing crumbled boulders at you. You’ll need to use the castle walls and the environment to act as shields, otherwise these boulders will deal huge damage. They can, at least, also take out Ganados.

Keep moving down the path and drop down into the next area. Back up underneath where you dropped down, activate the lever here once, and then jump down into the lower level. Stay in cover, and just after a blast of rocks, use the ladder to climb up and access the next area.

In here, you can break another weight to raise up a cannon, and there’s another weight on the next level too. Use the ladder to climb up to where the cannon is and, when it’s safe, use the cannon to shoot directly at El Gigante’s face to stop its barrage. You should also look down to the left to shoot the Ganados up ahead, and the gate.

Finally, with all of that chaos out of the way, you’ll catch up with Ashley, and you can explain that you both share the same problem, and should stick together. That brings Chapter 8 to a close. Next up is our Resident Evil 4 remake Chapter 9 walkthrough.
