Have you been thinking about cutting your hair… like, really cutting your hair? Good! Because you’re going to do it this summer—at least if these pro hairstylist predictions have anything to do with it.
As soon as the temperature rises, it’s totally natural to want to say sayonara to your long hair in favor of cool crops that leave your neck bare and let the breeze blow across your skin. “As soon as the sun comes out and the weather starts to change for the warmer, I immediately want to cut my hair off!” says celebrity hairstylist Ashley Streicher. “It’s that time of year when you want a reset, and there’s nothing better than chopping a bunch of dead hair off! Short hair feels ‘lifted.’” Plus, adding layers or cutting length can make styling faster and easier, which is just what you want when it’s sunny and you’re just trying to squeeze in a beach day between the nine weddings on your calendar.
“Summer is all about transformation—it’s a season of movement, travel, and letting go,” says Leo Izquierdo, co-founder of IGK Hair. “People want haircuts that feel lighter, more expressive, and easier to style on the go. To me, ‘summer hair’ means effortless beauty: hair that feels fresh, touchable, and ready for adventure, whether you’re poolside or out late with friends.”
Ahead, top stylists share their favorite cuts for summer 2025—emphasis on cuts. Yep, you guessed it… it’s all about bobs, low-key layers, and breezy, air-dried styles.

Pixie Bob
If you really wanna go there and chop all your hair off, look no further than the pixie bob, which Rodney Cutler, owner of Cutler Salon in New York City, says “is perfect for summer, as it’s an effortless style with a cool, sexy vibe to it.” The pixie bob, also known as a bixie, works well on all hair textures, he explains. “It can be styled blown out or dried to enhance natural texture for a playful feel.” At the salon, ask for a pixie bob or bixie cut with a lot of layering, texturizing, and shorter, face-framing layers. To air dry, Cutler recommends styling with a combo of Redken Texture Paste, Hydrating Curl Cream, and Spray Wax.
Hairstylist and Christophe Robin ambassador Monique McMahon co-signs the pixie, citing that the air dry-friendly style is the epitome of summer hair. “It’s super carefree, very loose, ultra-natural, and it embraces natural movement so you don’t really have to style it,” she says. Texture spray is an essential for the summer, especially one that “won’t dry crispy,” she says. (Her pick is Christophe Robin’s Volumising Leave-In Mist with Rose Water.) If you have fine hair, add thickness and texture with a fine hair-centric shampoo, like Cleansing Volumising Paste with Rose Extracts, which helps build density at the roots for a fuller look.

Butterfly Cut
Izquierdo describes this ultra-layered style as “breezy, romantic, and incredibly flattering,” so basically everything you want in summer hair. “It creates volume and movement, giving the illusion of two lengths with short layers that frame the face and longer layers that cascade down the back.” Izquierdo also praises the cut’s “weightless, windswept effect,” which looks gorgeous for all your summer parties.
The butterfly cut works best for medium to thick hair that can hold layers and volume; Izquierdo says it’s particularly great for those with natural waves or curls. Ask your stylist for face-framing layers that begin at the cheekbone and long, blended layers throughout to create the “butterfly wing” effect. To style, Izquierdo recommends applying IGK Big Time Volume and Thickening Mousse to damp hair, then blowing out the hair with a large round brush or rollers for volume.

The Italian Bob
The Italian bob returns summer after summer because it’s the perfect fusion of retro glamour and effortless chic. “It feels fresh and elevated,” says Izquierdo. “It keeps hair off the neck, while still offering enough length for versatility.” (It also looks great with sunglasses.) Izquierdo recommends the cut for medium to thick hair types, especially people who want a low-maintenance cut. In the chair, ask for “a chin- to shoulder-length blunt bob with soft, beveled ends and minimal layering to maintain fullness,” he says.
If you’re heat-styling your bob, Izquierdo advises prepping with IGK Good Behavior Spirulina Protein Smoothing Spray to smooth and protect from heat damage, then blowing dry with a round brush. To finish, spritz on Disco Disco Clear Gloss Shine Spray for glassy shine.

Long Layer and Curtain Bangs
You can cut bangs for summer without turning into a sweaty mess. Curtain bangs are the perfect solution, as they’re cut long and meant to be worn parted near your brows; they can easily be pinned back or pushed to the side. Celebrity hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos recommends pairing them with long layers for a “breezy, romantic feel that is perfect for summer evenings.” The cut is “really great for fine to medium hair looking to add volume,” he says. “It complements round and square face shapes by elongating the appearance of the face.” Ask for long layers that start below the chin and open up around the face, with shape through the mid-lengths and ends. “For the bangs, ask for a center part with soft, sweeping hair frames that complement your eyes and cheekbones,” Giannetos advises. To bring out the bounce in the bangs, prep damp hair with a mousse like Moroccanoil Volumizing Mousse, then shape the bangs away from the face with a round brush and blow dryer.

The Modern Shag
Looking for something super low maintenance this summer? The shag is here to help. Streicher says this versatile cut is ideal for “air-drying straight from the beach,” and we agree. The modern shag is all about choppy layers that add volume and movement to the hair; it works on all hair textures and types, says Streicher, but looks best on curly to wavy hair since it enhances natural texture and movement. You can add fringe around the face for a ‘70s vibe, but make sure to ask your stylist for choppy, swingy layers. Style with a wave spray—Streicher’s pick is R+Co’s Sail Soft Wave Spray—to give hair lots of cool, effortless texture and hold.

The Parisian Bob
Gregory Russell, celebrity hairstylist and global artistic ambassador for Pureology, cuts one of the most iconic bobs on TV right now: Lily Collins’ Emily in Paris crop. He calls the look both “chic and strong,” and we agree.
Bobs work on all hair textures, but Russell suggests consulting with your stylist about the best length and shape for your face. “Rounder faces would want to keep more length to balance proportions, and narrow faces might want to add layers or try a deep side part to open their face,” he explains.
Hairstylist Temur Hamilton is also a fan of the French bob. “Falling to chin-length or slightly above, with a curved, face-framing shape, this is a chic take on the classic short hairstyle,” he says, praising the versatile styling and low maintenance.”It’s easy to style on lazy summer days or when on vacation—simply add some texturizing product,” Hamilton says, adding that Sally Hershberger’s 24K Supreme Stylist Voluminous Dry Shampoo, which “creates volume and beautiful texture” while freshening hair, is his top pick.

The Resort Bob
Leslie Bibb’s White Lotus bob, crafted by Chris McMillian, is sticking around for the summer. “Short hair always gives spring and summer to me,” says Streicher. “It’s fresh and easy to style.” This above-the-chin, blunt-cut bob is perfect for finer hair textures, she says, but it works well on almost every hair type. At the salon, ask your stylist for a short, “to the hairline blunt bob with no layers,” Streicher says. She recommends shampooing with a texturizing shampoo like R+Co Labyrinth 3-in-1 Texturizing Shampoo, then air-drying with Sun Catcher Power C Boosting Leave-In Conditioner for a lived-in, tropical resort texture. Just add a floral sundress!

Modern "The Rachel" Layers
Yes, you read that right—the infamous “Rachel” cut, as seen on Jennifer Aniston during Friends, is back. “We’re seeing a revival of ‘90s style in general, and this look is popular because it’s flattering, versatile, and easy to achieve,” says Hamilton.
Volume and movement is key here, says Hamilton. “This makes it feel sophisticated, yet effortless—perfect for summer.” Layers add volume and movement to thin, fine hair, and take the weight out of thicker hair. “The length and face-framing pieces are especially flattering to square and oval face shapes,” he says. To style, Hamilton recommends a “big, bouncy blowout” with lots of texture. “I like to start with a texturizing product, like Christophe Robin’s Cleansing Volumizing Paste with Rose Extracts,” he says. “Use this in the shower to cleanse and volumize the hair at the same time. Then, apply a mousse, like Sally Hershberger’s 24K Supreme Body Volumizing Mousse, and blow dry the hair, working to create lots of volume.” Finish with hair spray and it’s off to Central Perk!
